BA short haul vs long haul for a new joiner, can you choose?

#1 Asking for the Irish contingent thinking about BA. Do new joiners choose short or long haul at Heathrow, or is it assigned?

#2 On the current Heathrow contract new joiners fly both, short haul and long haul in the same month, and there is no choosing at the start. Preferences and bidding come with seniority within the fleet. Gatwick is its own operation with more leisure long haul. Most people prefer the mixed months once they are in them, a Cape Town followed by three Edinburgh turnarounds is a nice balance.
