Overview

Singapore Airlines is the reference point for service excellence in world aviation, and its cabin crew — marketed for decades through the 'Singapore Girl' campaign — are the most visible part of that brand. Crew are all based in Singapore and fly a premium wide-body network spanning six continents, including some of the longest flights in the world to New York and Los Angeles. Training runs around four months, among the longest in the industry, covering safety, service ritual, wine, meal presentation and deportment in exhaustive detail before a new joiner ever works a revenue flight.

Pay is the strongest in Asia: new crew realistically take home around SGD 3,200-3,700 per month in their first year once flying allowances are added, climbing to SGD 6,000-7,500 for senior ranks — and Singapore income tax is famously light. Employment is structured as five-year contracts, renewable subject to performance, appearance and medical standards; most crew renew at least once, but the contract system means the airline retains real leverage over grooming and weight standards throughout a career in a way permanent-employment carriers do not.

Life at SIA is disciplined. Grooming checks are genuine and ongoing, the kebaya uniform is fitted and unforgiving, and service standards on board are policed through in-flight assessments that feed directly into promotion and renewal decisions. In exchange, crew get world-class layovers, a globally respected CV line, and a crew community that is smaller and more tightly knit than the Gulf giants. Non-Singaporeans (chiefly Malaysians and, in some intakes, other regional nationalities) are hired but must relocate to Singapore at their own cost — there is no company housing.

Base & accommodation

Singapore · Not provided

No housing or allowance; crew arrange their own accommodation in Singapore. Many Malaysian crew share flats near the East Coast or commute from Johor Bahru between trips.

Roster & layovers

Roster style

Monthly rosters mix ultra-long-haul, regional and turnaround flying with roughly 8-10 days off; limited bidding and a swap culture. Ultra-long-haul New York trips come with multiple crew rest breaks but heavy time-zone whiplash.

Layovers

Excellent long-haul layovers — 24-48 hours in Europe, the US and Australia at good hotels — balanced against short regional night-stops and same-day Southeast Asia turnarounds.

Benefits beyond the paycheck

  • ★Heavily discounted and free staff travel on SIA and Star Alliance partners for crew and family

  • ★Comprehensive medical and dental coverage

  • ★Access to Singapore Airlines Group internal transfers (ground, training, corporate) after flying

Frequently asked questions

How much do Singapore Airlines cabin crew earn per month?

New crew take home roughly SGD 3,200-3,700 (about USD 2,400-2,900) per month including flying allowances in their first year. Senior ranks — Chief Stewardess and In-flight Manager — earn SGD 6,000-7,500. Singapore's low income tax means most of it stays in your pocket.

Can foreigners join Singapore Airlines as cabin crew?

Yes, but selectively. Malaysians are hired in most rounds, and SIA periodically recruits in other Asian markets (Indonesia, India, Taiwan, Japan and Korea have featured in past drives). All crew must relocate to Singapore and cover their own housing.

Is Singapore Airlines cabin crew a permanent job?

No — crew are employed on five-year contracts, renewable based on performance, medical fitness and appearance standards. Many crew serve two, three or more contracts, but renewal is not automatic, which is the key structural difference from carriers offering permanent employment.
