Southwest trip for pay explained by someone who does it
-
#1 Five years Las Vegas. Southwest pays per trip (a unit tied to flight time and sectors) rather than per block hour like the legacy carriers. Practical effect: efficient days with more sectors pay well, long days with delays pay less well than at the hourly carriers. The recent contract raised the rates a lot. Reserve exists but the rhythm is domestic, quick, and home more nights. Fun culture is real, though every airline says that.

#2 The trip for pay difference is the thing to understand before choosing. Dexter nailed it.
