The two-bag system
Nearly all long-haul crew converge on the same setup: a hard-shell roller (the 'layover bag') and a structured tote or backpack (the 'cabin bag') that lives with you in the galley. The roller holds layover life; the cabin bag holds everything you need at 38,000 feet. Pack the cabin bag identically every trip — muscle memory beats packing lists at 4 a.m.
Cabin bag: the flying office
The items that appear in almost every senior crew member's bag:
- Compression socks — the single most recommended crew item in existence
- Lip balm, hand cream and a small facial mist (cabin humidity sits near 10%)
- Collapsible water bottle — hydration is the real jet lag drug
- Portable charger + universal adapter, packed in the same pocket every time
- Spare tights/socks, hair pins, sewing kit, stain pen for uniform emergencies
- Snacks with protein — crew meals are never guaranteed on short turnarounds
- Small first-aid pouch: painkillers, plasters, electrolyte sachets, earplugs
Layover bag: sleep is the luxury
Veterans pack for recovery, not fashion: comfortable pajamas and a hoodie (crew consistently rank warmth and sleep over style), gym kit that doubles as walking clothes, one versatile going-out outfit, and swimwear year-round — hotel pools and saunas are the crew wellness system.
The pro touches: a travel-size hot water bottle for cold crew rest and hotels, pegless travel clothesline, laundry sheets for sink washes, and a small bluetooth speaker. Roll everything, use packing cubes, and keep a permanently packed toiletry kit that never leaves the bag.
What veterans stopped packing
Ask a ten-year crew member what changed and they'll tell you what they removed: the second pair of heels, the 'just in case' third outfit, full-size anything, and books that never got opened (an e-reader ended that argument). Every 100 grams matters when you lift the bag onto 15 hotel luggage racks per month.
