ANA (All Nippon Airways) — Appearance & Grooming

Precise and Japanese-corporate in tone, but noticeably more relaxed than it was: ANA now permits spectacles, flatter shoes, trousers and more natural styling.

Grooming · ANA (All Nippon Airways)

Hair
Neat, secured and natural in colour, clear of the face and of service. ANA publishes no list of approved styles, and the old single prescribed look has softened.
Make-up
Natural and restrained rather than a prescribed face. ANA relaxed its styling rules in recent years and no longer polices the heavily specified standard it once did.
Facial hair
Male crew are expected clean-shaven; ANA publishes no beard allowance.
Nails
Short, clean, and either bare or in a pale natural shade. Nail art and extensions sit outside the standard.
Glasses & contacts
Yes. ANA lifted the effective ban and cabin crew may wear spectacles on board — part of the same round of reforms that brought in flatter shoes and a trouser option.
Piercings
One pair of small earlobe studs at most. Visible facial, nose and body piercings are not part of the standard.
Jewellery
Minimal — a watch, a wedding band and the issued badge. Japanese carriers read conspicuous jewellery as a service distraction.
Tattoos in uniform
Nothing may be visible, and this is enforced more literally than in Europe or the Americas because tattoos still carry a strong social stigma in Japan. Assume ink on forearms, wrists, neck or hands rules you out rather than merely needing covering.
Headscarf
ANA does not publish a headscarf policy and the uniform has no headscarf piece. Ask the recruitment team directly if you need one.
Uniform
A navy uniform in the ANA blue — dress or blouse and skirt, with a trouser option and lower-heeled shoes now permitted. Male crew wear a navy suit.

Grooming rules change more often than any other requirement. Verify them on the airline's official careers page before you buy anything or book a hair appointment.

Frequently asked questions

Can ANA cabin crew wear glasses?

Yes. ANA now permits spectacles on board, alongside flatter shoes and trousers, as part of its recent grooming reforms.

Can you have tattoos as ANA cabin crew?

No visible tattoos, and Japanese carriers apply this strictly — social attitudes to tattoos in Japan mean the rule is enforced more literally than at Western airlines.

Do ANA cabin crew have to wear make-up?

A natural, groomed look is expected, but the heavily specified make-up standard of the past has been relaxed. Check ANA's own recruitment pages before an intake — Japanese carriers have revised these rules repeatedly since 2020.
