KLM — Appearance & Grooming
KLM's appearance standard is pragmatic and Dutch: professional, safe for the cabin and consistent with the airline's famous blue, without the prescriptive shade-by-shade manuals the Gulf carriers run. Most of it is set out during initial training at the KLM training centre.
Grooming · KLM
- Hair
- Neat and off the collar in a natural colour, styled so it holds through European turnarounds and intercontinental services alike. KLM does not publish a list of approved styles.
- Make-up
- No published specification. The Dutch standard is professional and discreet rather than mandated, and the detail comes from the training centre rather than the vacancy text.
- Facial hair
- KLM does not publish a beard rule. Neatly maintained facial hair is unremarkable at Benelux carriers, but confirm at the Schiphol selection day rather than assuming.
- Nails
- Clean, short and discreet, with no published shade or length limits. Practicality on a two-tier European and intercontinental roster is the real constraint.
- Glasses & contacts
- Prescription glasses are accepted with conventional frames and no published restriction. A spare pair is standard practice on intercontinental rotations.
- Piercings
- Discreet and minimal — small plain earrings, nothing facial. KLM does not publish a numbered limit, so keep the selection day conservative.
- Jewellery
- Plain, professional pieces that read well with the uniform. No published list exists beyond the general expectation of discretion.
- Tattoos in uniform
- Nothing may be visible in uniform, and KLM accepts coverage by uniform items rather than by makeup — so the question is whether the shirt, jacket and skirt or trousers genuinely hide it across a full duty. Hand, neck and face tattoos are not accepted at all.
- Headscarf
- KLM does not publish a headscarf option for cabin crew as a named uniform item. Ask recruitment during an open campaign rather than assuming either way.
- Uniform
- The distinctive KLM blue two-piece, one of the most recognisable uniforms in Europe and a deliberate piece of brand continuity for an airline flying since 1919. It is issued and fitted at the KLM training centre before your first flight.
Grooming rules change more often than any other requirement. Verify them on the airline's official careers page before you buy anything or book a hair appointment.

Does KLM allow beards for cabin crew?
KLM does not publish a beard rule. Neatly maintained facial hair is unremarkable at Benelux carriers, but confirm at the Schiphol selection day, as the standard is set in training.
What are KLM's grooming standards for cabin crew?
Professional, discreet and cabin-safe rather than prescriptive — hair neat and off the collar, minimal jewellery, nothing visible in uniform that should not be. The detail comes from the KLM training centre.
