Open Day vs. Assessment Day vs. Invite-Only
An Open Day means you can walk in with a CV and photos, no invitation needed — Emirates runs these constantly worldwide, and it is genuinely the easiest door into the company. An Assessment Day is the full selection event, either following an Open Day shortlist or an online application. Know which one you're attending: Open Days can be one-hour CV drops or can roll straight into assessments the same afternoon, so always arrive prepared for the full process.
Stage 1: First impressions and the CV drop
You are being assessed from the moment you enter the room — recruiters famously watch how candidates treat each other before the event starts. Dress in business formal styled toward the airline's look, arrive 30 minutes early, and bring: printed CV, full-length and passport photos to spec, passport copies, and education certificates.
Many candidates are cut here on grooming alone: visible tattoos spotted during the reach test, chipped nails, unnatural hair color, or a creased shirt. It is brutal and it is real.
Stage 2: The group exercise — where most people fail
Groups of 8–12 get a discussion task: rank survival items, design an airline, resolve a customer scenario. The content of your answer barely matters. Assessors score behaviors: Did you speak enough but not too much? Did you build on others' ideas? Did you invite the quiet person in? Did you keep warmth under time pressure?
The two guaranteed cuts: the dominator who talks over everyone, and the ghost who says nothing. Aim for 3–4 quality contributions, at least one of which elevates someone else's idea.
Stage 3: English test and final interview
Non-native speakers face a written and sometimes computer-based English test — practice standard aviation-adjacent vocabulary and don't overthink it. The final interview is behavioral (see our interview questions guide) and often includes a document review. Gulf carriers typically deliver a 'golden call' within days to weeks; silence for 6+ weeks usually means an unsuccessful file that can be reactivated after a 6-month cooling period.
Frequently asked questions
How many people pass an Emirates assessment day?
Unofficial recruiter figures suggest 5–10% of Open Day attendees receive final offers. The group exercise and grooming checks account for most eliminations.
Can I reapply after being rejected?
Yes. Emirates and Qatar Airways allow reapplication after 6 months. Use the gap to fix what likely failed: grooming, group-stage behavior, or English scores.
